In this Lab you will compare theoretical probabilities with the results of simulations generated by Minitab.

Note that semi-colons and periods are important when writing the commands into the prompt. Each

simulation will ask for the theoretical or actual probability of the experiment, and then ask for the result of

the simulation. You will have to compute the actual (theoretical) probability or probabilities by hand.

EXPRESS ALL ANSWERS IN DECIMAL FORM AND ALWAYS USE 3 DECIMAL PLACES FOR PROBABILITIES.

Print out the information output in the left-hand History window (but not the commands on the righthand side of the window, if you have that part open) for the simulations as this will contain all of the

unique information necessary to answer the questions based upon your individual simulation. However,

DO NOT PRINT OUT THE WORKSHEET PORTION OF EACH SIMULATION (YOU JUST NEED THE PART IN

THE HISTORY WINDOW.) Make sure to write your answers in the spaces provided on the Answer Page.

The Simulations:

1) The following commands will produce four sets of simulated coin flips. The first set will contain 80

flips, the second set will contain 300 flips, the third set will contain 600 flips and the last set will

contain 4000 flips:

MTB> RANDOM 80 C1;

INTEGER 0 1.

MTB> RANDOM 300 C2;

INTEGER 0 1.

MTB> RANDOM 600 C3;

INTEGER 0 1.

MTB> RANDOM 4000 C4;

INTEGER 0 1.

MTB> TALLY C1-C4;

COUNT;

PERCENT.

2) The following commands will simulate 10 people rolling a fair die 18 times:

MTB> RANDOM 18 C5-C14;

INTEGER 1 6.

MTB> TALLY C5-C14;

COUNT;

PERCENT.

3) The commands for this experiment simulate rolling two dice 500 times and then calculating their

sum and difference. Label C15 “Die_1”, C16 “Die_2”, C17 “Sum_3”, and C18 “Diff_3”.

MTB> RANDOM 500 C15,C16;

INTEGER 1 6.

MTB> LET C17=C15+C16

MTB> LET C18=C15–C16

MTB> TALLY C15–C18;
